Amidst the devastation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Liberian Swedish Association (LSA) community has initiated a fundraising campaign to support nurses at three major hospitals in Liberia.
This initiative was decided during a general community meeting held on Saturday, April 25, 2020, via the Zoom App. It was unanimously agreed that members of the LSA community should extend assistance to Liberian nurses working tirelessly on the frontline to save lives and contain the spread of COVID-19 in Liberia.
Strategies were devised to encourage Liberians and friends of Liberia in Sweden to make financial donations to this cause. The funds collected will be used to purchase bags of rice, which will then be distributed to nurses at the John F. Kennedy (JFK) and Redemption hospitals in Montserrado County, as well as the newly constructed 14 Military Hospital in Margibi County.
These hospitals were selected because the nurses there risk their lives daily while caring for infected patients, yet receive minimal financial and other essential support. Additionally, Montserrado County and its neighboring county, Margibi, are densely populated and have the highest number of COVID-19 cases in Liberia.
The leadership of LSA, along with leaders from various LSA chapters, have started rallying all Liberians and friends of Liberia in their communities to contribute to this noble cause. Despite the financial constraints faced by many LSA members due to the pandemic, President Mr. David Ford emphasized the urgent need for solidarity and assistance for our fellow citizens in Liberia.
To kickstart the initiative, LSA as an organization has made an initial donation from its humanitarian budget, and further donations have been received from several Liberians. The fundraising efforts will continue until May 31st, 2020. Donations can be made through LSA's Swish account # 1234351649, with "FOR RICE" specified in the message column.
